Six Harmonies Pagoda

The Six Harmonies Pagoda, also known as the Liuhe Pagoda, sits on the southwestern fringe of Hangzhou. It is 60-meter (197-foot) high. The building is more than 1,000 years old.

There is a myth about the construction of the pagoda. Qiantang River often suffers from tidal bores that surge up from Hangzhou Bay. The Dragon King controlled these. Hearing of this, a boy named Liuhe summoned up magical powers to stop the Dragon King’s actions. Hence, the local farmers built this fine wood and brick structure in his name.

Over the years the Liuhe Pagoda serves as both lighthouse and temple. Its summit is a favorite place to watch the tidal bores that still tear up Qiantang today.
